The Greater Merseyside Learning Providers’ Federation (GMLPF) is a non-profit membership body representing around 70 skills and education providers across the Liverpool City Region, one of the largest networks of its kind in the country. As carbon and sustainability climbed the agenda, its members increasingly needed to teach green skills they had not yet been trained in themselves. Through the federation’s Provider Improvement Fund, backed by the European Social Fund and the Liverpool City Region’s Strategic Investment Fund, we delivered carbon footprinting training to bring provider staff up to speed.

the need
GMLPF exists to raise the quality of post-16 education and training across the Liverpool City Region, and to give its member providers a single voice and a shared route to improvement. As employers and learners started asking more about sustainability, a gap became clear: many training providers were being expected to build carbon and green skills into their courses, without having been trained in the fundamentals themselves.
The federation ran a funded route to close gaps exactly like this. Its Provider Improvement Fund, managed by GMLPF and backed by the European Social Fund and the Liverpool City Region’s Strategic Investment Fund, offered members free continuing professional development. Carbon footprinting was an obvious candidate, and we were appointed to deliver it.

The training was designed for an audience of educators, not just to explain carbon footprinting, but to leave them able to apply it and pass it on. Our courses are CPD-accredited and written with Liverpool John Moores University.
