Climate Kids Academy
Why We Exist
At One Earth Education, we believe in empowering the next generation to to embed sustainable behaviours and understand the reality of our changing climate.
We understand that climate change is not only the biggest threat we face as a planet but also a source of anxiety for many children. A recent study by BBC found that nearly three-quarters of 8 to 16-year-olds in the UK feel anxious about the state of the planet.
Furthermore, research from the National Children’s Bureau indicates that children want to learn more about environmental issues, with 92% believing that it’s important to learn about climate change. We are driven by the conviction that education is the most powerful tool we have to combat this threat and alleviate climate anxiety.
How We Do It
In partnership with Liverpool John Moores University’s Low Carbon Eco-Innovatory, we’ve developed the Climate Kids Academy.
This innovative climate change education for children not only educates but also engages young people in the journey towards a sustainable future. We calculate your school’s emissions footprint, improve climate awareness for both pupils and staff and involve the children in the school’s carbon-cutting journey.
Our climate for kids program is designed to improve Ofsted & Estyn performance, covering all core subjects and making sustainability accessible and relatable. It can be used to deliver both English & Welsh curriculum, as part of after-school programs, for Eco-School initiatives, and for homeschooling.
What We Offer
The Climate Kids Academy is a subscription-based climate awareness program for Key Stages 1-3 & Progression Steps 1-5.
Our online climate change resources for teachers will guide you through a modular program filled with videos, interactive challenges, games, and classroom discussions. Each month, we unlock core modules and current affairs modules that tackle current environmental issues in the news.
We also host live Ask-A-Scientist webinars where children can ask their questions to climate experts from all backgrounds.
Our climate change education for children provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the causes and effects of climate change. More importantly, it empowers them by explaining what they can do to reduce daily emissions at school and home.
We also provide your school with the means to calculate its emissions footprint and challenge pupils to reduce it, fostering a sense of responsibility and achievement.
The Journey
Our climate for kids program is not a one-off course but a multi-year journey.
Each year, we return to recalculate the school’s carbon footprint and track progress, passing the carbon-cutting responsibility to the next year of pupils. The school then begins the next program with new features and updated content.
This ongoing journey ensures that sustainability becomes a core part of the school culture and that each new generation of students is equipped with the knowledge and skills to combat climate change.
Throughout this journey, we assess the children’s understanding and progress. This not only helps us tailor our climate change lessons for kids to meet their needs but also provides valuable feedback to the schools and parents.
It also allows the children to see their progress and understand the impact of their actions, further motivating them to make sustainable choices.
The Impact
The Climate Kids Academy program offers a multitude of benefits for both pupils and teachers, transforming the educational environment while promoting sustainability and cost savings. Here are some key impacts:
– Reducing Climate Anxiety: Education about climate change can help alleviate the anxiety felt by nearly 75% of 8 to 16-year-olds in the UK. (BBC Climate Anxiety Survey 2020)
– Cost Savings: Simple, low-cost measures could reduce UK schools’ energy costs by around £44 million per year, or £8,000 per school. (Carbon Trust 2022)
– Improving Sustainable Behaviours: Our program instills sustainable behaviours in students, potentially reducing a school’s energy consumption by 20%. (Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Report 2021)
– Moving Towards Net-Zero: We help schools calculate and reduce their emissions footprint, aiding the move towards net-zero emissions.
– Developing Ethically Informed Citizens: Our program helps develop citizens who understand the importance of sustainability and are ready to take action.
– Enhancing Curriculum and Performance: Our program improves Ofsted & Estyn performance, covers all core subjects, and makes sustainability accessible and relatable.
